ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The
Missouri Valley Conference has announced that Drake junior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) has been
selected as the MVC Men's Tennis Player of the Week. This marks the eighth
weekly accolade for a Drake men's tennis player this season and the sixth in
Ghorbel's career, including four this spring.
Ghorbel helped direct No. 49 Drake to its
fifth regular season MVC title in the last six years with a pair of victories
over previously league unbeaten Wichita State last Saturday (April 21) at the
Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
In doubles against the Shockers, he
paired with junior James McKie (Edinburgh,
Scotland) at the No. 1 position to post an 8-5 decision over David Cavalcanti
and Matheus Pereira, who entered the match unbeaten in league play.
In singles, he positioned himself for MVC
Player of the Year consideration downing Pereira, who came into the tilt
unbeaten in league action, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot.
On the season, Ghorbel owns a 48-12
combined singles/doubles ledger, including 27-6 in singles play.
Ghorbel and the Bulldogs (22-2) open defense of their 2011 State Farm Missouri
Valley Conference title on Saturday (April 28) in Omaha, Neb., at the State
Farm MVC Championship against the winner of the Illinois State/Southern
Illinois match at 1:00 p.m.
