Smith Moves Into Quarterfinals At NCAA Prelims

AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) secured a berth in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Smith was clocked in 13.43, a wind-aided time, during hot and humid conditions in Austin.

Friday marked the end of the Drake careers of seniors Jon DeGrave (Lake Villa, Ill.) and Ari Curtis (Fort Collins, Colo.) as neither was able to snare one of the 12 spots in the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Battling temperatures in the 90's, DeGrave finished his heat in 57.25, while Curtis clocked in at 58.81 to claim 18th.

The quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles will take place tomorrow night at 7:20 p.m. Smith will compete in the second lane in the second heat of the competion. The top-three finishers from each heat and the next three fastest times will earn spots at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines June 6-9.
