TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 16 ranked Arizona Wildcats (5-2) rallied to beat the Drake (4-3) softball team, 5-3, Friday night in the Bulldogs' opening game of the Hillenbrand Invitational.

Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first with a two-run blast in the top of the first inning, 2-0.

An Arizona fielding error helped Drake add a run in the fourth inning. Senior Lindsey Vande Wall (Prairie City, Iowa) reached on an error by Wildcats second baseman Chelsea Suitos with one-out and came around to score on an RBI-single by Nicole Randel (Alpine, Calif.).

The Wildcats got on the board in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Hallie Wilson and added another run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Wilson.

Arizona went ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on one hit and one error. Sophomore Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) took the loss after coming in for junior Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) in relief and her record drops to 1-2 on the season. Gronewold pitched 5.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

In the second game of the evening the Purdue Boilermakers (3-3) erupted for six runs in the first two innings and held on for the 8-5 win over the Bulldogs.

Purdue scored three runs in the top of the first inning but the Bulldogs answered with two of their own in the bottom of half of the frame. Randel doubled home Macie Silliman (Winterset, Iowa) and Cortney Wood (Alburnett, Iowa) followed with an RBI single to plate Randel.

The Boilermakers added three more in the second on one hit and one error but once again the Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the inning this time with another two-run home run by Nybo to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Purdue added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Andie Varsho and another run in the six to build its lead to 8-4.

Nybo drove home her fifth run of the evening with a double to score Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) in the sixth inning. Nybo and Randel each finished 2-for-4 with one run scored against Purdue. Pierce went 1-fo-3 with two runs scored.
