NEW ORLEANS - After
a record-setting indoor season, Drake University track and field senior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) has earned
All-America honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association, the organization announced this week.
Twombly placed 14th in the weight throw at the 2013 NCAA
Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend with a mark of 62-4.5. It
was the first time that a Drake male field athlete had competed at the NCAA
Indoor Championships.
"My season so far has been unbelievable," Twombly said.
"Being named an All-American was something completely unexpected."
The USTFCCCA gave honors to 288 men and 266 women for the
2013 NCAA Division I indoor track and field season based on their performances
at the indoor championships
First-team honors were given to student-athletes who placed
in the top eight in an event or were a member of an eight-person final. Those
who finished ninth through 16th place earned second team honors.
Twombly's season-best throw of 68-7.25
won the 2013 MVC Championships and stands as the third-best throw in the
conference this season and the 16th-best overall in the nation.
The senior broke his own personal and school record three times this season
including his MVC Championship throw. Previously, his throws of 65-0.75 at the
ISU Open on Jan. 18 and 66-10.75 at the ISU Classic on Feb. 9 each shattered
his own school and personal records.
In addition to firmly etching his name
in the Drake record books, Twombly achieved both of his personal goals for the
season in winning the Missouri Valley Conference title and qualifying for the
NCAA Championships.
Ten MVC student-athletes were honored with all-America
status, five men including Twombly and five women. Of the 15 awards given,
eight were for first-team performances. Three women, Illinois State's Brittany
Smith (shot put, weight throw), Indiana State's Felisha Johnson (shot put,
weight throw) and Wichita State's Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton (3,000 and 5,000
meters) won two awards, both first-team.
