Ames, Iowa - Saturday
saw a host of personal and season best performances for the Drake men's and
women's track and field teams at the ISU Qualifier hosted a the Lied
Recreational Center.
The
athletes used the meet as a final attempt to reach the top-16 qualifying marks
nationally in order to advance to the NCAA Championships next weekend in
Fayetteville, Ark.
Senior
Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa) finished an outstanding indoor
season in the 400 meters for the women's squad with a season best time of 56.09
to finish fourth.
Senior
Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) matched her personal best set a week
ago of 8.41 in the 60-meter hurdles. The 2013 MVC Indoor Champion in the event,
Yeager ran 8.41 to finish third. The time ranks in the top 50 nationally and is
a personal best.
In fourth was senior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) in 8.46,
a season best for her. Smith was the two-time defending MVC champion in the
event before being disqualified for incidental contact last weekend.
Senior
Briana Isom-Brummer (St.
Louis, Mo.) was sixth in 8.80 and freshman Destani
Welch (Des Moines, Iowa) was ninth in 9.05.
The meet ends the indoor season for the Drake women. Twombly will wait to see
if his throw of 68-7.25 holds up and qualifies the senior for the NCAA
Championships.
