ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Four Drake men's soccer student-athletes have been honored for their work in the classroom and in competition with a selection to the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team, the conference announced this week.
Junior Alec Bartlett (Overland Park, Kan.), senior Thomas Schermoly (Olathe, Kan.) and junior Alex Troester (Iowa City, Iowa) were named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team to match a league high. Sophomore James Grunert (Muskego, Wis.) was an honorable mention selection. Evansville and Missouri State each had three first-team honorees as well.
Bartlett, who recently received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, started all 19 matches for the Bulldogs this past season with two goals and pair of assists to earn first-team All-MVC honors for the second-consecutive season. A biology major with a 3.56 GPA, he was also a recipient of the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award.
Schermoly earned his second-straight first team Scholar-Athlete honor on the heels of being named a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection for the second time. A biology major with a 3.76 GPA, Schermoly played in all 19 matches for the Bulldogs this past season with an assist and seven shots, four of them on goal.
Troester collected his first Scholar-Athlete team selection after posting three assists and a goal in his junior campaign. Previously he had twice been named a recipient of the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award. Troester maintains a 3.95 GPA in his biochemistry, cell and molecular biology curriculum.
Grunert, a defender, helped the Bulldogs post three shutouts in his 17 starts on the season while recording 13 shots. A health sciences major, he own a 3.70 GPA and has earned the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award.
The criteria for the all-MVC honor parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-season matches or played in the league tournament. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
