LINCOLN, Neb. – The Drake University track and field teams recorded eight personal bests in six different events at this weekend's Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
“This meet was about running season and personal bests,” Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown said. “We were able to accomplish that in a lot of events on both the men's and women's sides.”
Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) led the parade of personal bests with the Bulldogs' top finish of the day. The sophomore continued her stellar indoor season by finishing fourth overall in the mile in a time of 5:02.73 that won her section of the mile.
The bulk of the Bulldogs' personal bests came in the preliminary round of the women's 60 meters with Tiara Winston (Denton, Texas) clocking her fastest time in the event of 7.73 to finish 19th in the deep field with Danyelle Cole (Kansas City, Kan.) recording the same time as well. Freshman Jessica Campbell (West Des Moines, Iowa) finished just behind the two veterans in 24th place with a personal best of 7.78 while Ariel Kinlow (Brown Deer, Wis.) also recorded a career-best time of 7.80 to give Drake three career bests in the event. Winston also turned in the best 200 meter time of her career with a 25.20 finish in the event.
India Knight (Germantown, Md.) recorded her second straight fourth-place finish in the 600 meters by recording a personal best time of 1:36.02 to shave nearly three seconds off her previous best.
For the men's squad, James Saxton (La Crosse, Wis.) finished eighth in the 800 meters with his fastest indoor time in the event at 1:54.41. The squad also had a pair of top-10 finishes in the mile with Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.) coming in fifth in 4:14.51. Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) was knocked off the track in the event, but still managed to battle back and finish eighthin 4:18.74.
“It's encouraging to have these performances happen in the middle of the season,” Kaiser-Brown said of the slew of personal bests. “Running on a banked track can be tricky. If you can negotiate the facility, you will perform well, but it's a matter of learning the track in a matter of minutes.”
Travis Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa) figured that banking out at the Devaney Center to record the fastest indoor 400-meter time of his career in 48.75.
“Travis ran great in the 400 meters and the other 400-meter guys all delivered fast times,” Kaiser-Brown said.
Marsh was 13th overall in the event but won his heat while Ian Wells (Champaign, Ill.) was 27th in 49.57.
The Bulldogs continue their indoor season next weekend at the Iowa State Classic at ISU's Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa. Competition at the two-day meet begins Friday, Feb. 14.
