FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. –The Drake University softball team blanked Stephen F. Austin, 8-0, to advance to the Woo Pig Fastpitch Classic championship game. Drake (4-14) will face host Arkansas at 5 p.m. today in the title game as it looks to avenge Friday night's loss to the Razorbacks.
In the third inning against the Ladyjacks (8-11), Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) blasted her team-leading third home run of the year to put Drake on the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead. Liz Buck (Overland Park, Kan.) came around to score as she led off the frame with a single to left field.
Freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) started the fourth inning with a double over the centerfielder's head and two batters later she scored on Buck's RBI single up the middle.
Drake tallied two runs in the fifth inning with one run coming from junior Hayley Nybo's (Minnetonka, Minn.) base knock which plated Pierce.
Senior Nicole Randel (Alpine, Calif.) ended the game in the sixth inning with a two-run double that scored Pierce and freshman Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.).
Sophomore Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa) and junior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) combined for the shutout in the circle. McKinnon started and earned her first win of the year.
Pierce finished a stellar 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two runs batted in and three runs. Buck, Randel and Sowa each had two hits.
