Softball Captures Woo Pig Fastpitch Classic Title With 7-4 Win Over No. 24 Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Drake University softball team captured the 2014 Woo Pig Fastpitch Classic Championship knocking off host No. 24 Arkansas, 7-4, Saturday night at Bogle Park.

Senior Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) started the game with a double and three batters later junior Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) drove her in with a single for the first run of the game.

Arkansas (15-5) took the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs with three coming from Jennifer Rambo's home run off Drake (5-14) starter Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa).

Freshman Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) cut the deficit to 4-3 with her first career home run. Finneran blasted a two-run homer in the third inning and Nybo followed with a solo jack to tie the game at 4-4.

Drake capitalized on Arkansas's poor defense to take the lead for good in the sixth frame. The Razorbacks committed three errors as the Bulldogs got their first of two runs off a throwing error that plated Cortney Wood (Alburnett, Iowa), who reached with a one-out single. The last run came from a fielder's choice by Liz Buck (Overland Park, Kan.) that scored junior Laura Brewer (Waukee, Iowa).

Brewer drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning that brought in pinch runner Chelsea Blaylock (Des Moines, Iowa) with an insurance run.

Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) was outstanding in relief of Gronewold as the junior tossed 4.2 scoreless innings and limited Arkansas to just two hits. Schmidt earned the decision to improve her overall record to 4-7.

Nybo recorded two hits along with two runs batted in, while Wood added two hits. Finneran finished 1-for-2 with a home run and two runs batted in.

The Bulldogs are back in action next Friday, March 7 at the Mizuno Classic hosted by Oklahoma State with two games on the slate. First up is a matchup with league-mate Missouri State at 11 a.m. followed by a contest with Cowgirls at 4:30 p.m.
