Goodman Named MVC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Drake men's tennis senior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) and Sherry Zhang of Southern Illinois have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced on Wednesday (March 26). Goodman and Zhang were honored for their performances during the period of March 17-23.

Now in its 15th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

Goodman, who maintains a 3.56 grade-point average in business management, posted a 4-1 combined singles/doubles ledger to lead Drake to victories past No. 56 Princeton, No. 32 Memphis and No. 28 Harvard en route to capturing the championship at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic this past week.

In the Bulldogs' 4-2 win over Princeton (March 20), he earned his 100th career singles win with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Alexander Day at No. 3 singles.

Goodman capped a comeback against Memphis (March 21) that saw the Bulldogs erase a 3-0 deficit by earning the match-clinching point in a 4-3 triumph at the No. 3 position. Trailing 5-3 in the deciding third set with Drake one point away from the loss, Goodman battled back to force and win the tiebreaker versus David O'Leary to complete a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (2) victory.

In the Bulldogs' 4-1 win past Harvard last Saturday (March 22), Goodman teamed with sophomore Ben Lott (Newcastle, England) to upset the No. 6 duo of Casey MacMaster and Denis Nguyen, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point for the Bulldogs. In singles, he added a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3.

On the season, Goodman owns a 30-14 combined singles/doubles ledger, including a 12-3 singles mark this spring.

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
