IOWA CITY, Iowa – Junior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs batted in and tossed five innings in the circle as the Drake University softball team beat in-state rival Iowa, 5-3, on Wednesday night at Ron Pearl Field.

Schmidt held the Hawkeyes to just one run as she earned the decision to improve her record to 7-10. She gave up five hits, while striking out three. Senior Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) started the game and pitched two innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

Junior Laura Brewer finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Drake (8-22), while Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) had a two-run double. Freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Iowa) drew three walks and added a base knock and a run scored.

Schmidt blasted a ball deep into right centerfield for a one-out double for Drake's first run of the game in the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Pierce ripped a single up the middle to plate two more runs as the Bulldogs finished with three runs in the inning.

An inning later, Schmidt ripped another double as this one plated senior Cortney Wood (Alburnett, Iowa), who reached on an error.

After Iowa (9-16) had back-to-back doubles to put a run on the scoreboard in the third frame, Schmidt relieved Gronewold in the circle. Schmidt worked out of the jam, limiting the Hawkeyes to just one more run, which came from a sacrifice fly.

Iowa trimmed its deficit to 4-3 in the fifth inning as Megan Blank tallied an RBI single. Schmidt though dug in and worked out of the jam, holding the Hawkeyes to just the one run.

In the sixth, Drake collected an insurance run as Brewer singled to right field to bring in Sowa, who led off the inning with a single.

Drake will host Missouri State this weekend for a three-game conference home series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 5, starting at noon. The series finale is set for Sunday at noon.
