DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake men's tennis freshman
Bayo Philips (Houston, Texas) capped a successful opening weekend for the Bulldogs capturing the No. 1 singles crown on the final day of the Roger Knapp Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 20) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
Philips opened his day registering his first collegiate singles triumph downing Creighton's Jake Norman, 6-3, 6-3, before dispatching Motasem Al-Houni of Gustavus Adolphus in the semifinals.
In the championship tilt, Philips edged Northern Illinois' Frederic Cadieux, 6-2, 7-6 (3), to earn his first collegiate tournament title.
The Bulldogs return to action traveling to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the Saint Francis Health Systems/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships (Sept. 27-Oct. 5).
