Men?s And Women?s Track And Field Defeats Iowa State At Big Four Duals

AMES, Iowa – The Drake University men's and women's track and field teams each went 1-2 with a win over Iowa State at Saturday's annual Big Four Duals.

Drake's women's team defeated the Cyclones, 72-61, while the men prevailed, 75-68. Both teams fell to Iowa and UNI. Iowa's men's team went undefeated on the day while UNI did the same to the women's field.

The Bulldogs had 11 performances that finished in the top-3 of the four-team field with seven of them coming in the jumps.

Kayla Bell (Bollingbrook, Ill.) led that charge for the jumpers with a personal best of 39-5 in the triple jump to win the event and a personal best of 18-0.5 in the long jump to finish second. For the men, Ryan Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo.) notched a personal best in the high jump by clearing 6-10.75 to finish third in the event.

“Ryan's [Cook] jump was huge and Kayla [Bell] almost went 40 feet in the triple jump,” said Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown. “It was a great day for the jumpers.”

Johnathan Osifuye (Woodbury, Minn.) also added points for the men's team with third place finishes in the triple and long jumps courtesy of jumps of 45-10.5 and 21-7.5, respectively.

On the oval, the women's team had three runners in the top five of the 60 meters with Danyelle Cole (Kansas City, Kan.), Taryn Rolle and Rai Ahmed-Green (Irvine, Calif.) finishing second, third and fifth, respectively. Cole also took second in the 200 meters with a 25.44 finish while Ahmed-Green was third in the 400 meters in 56.88.

“I was happy with how we performed,” Kaiser-Brown said. “We showed improvement from last week, even though we had trained hard through the week.”

Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas) and Pierce Vincent (Fayetteville, Ga.) led the men's sprinters with fourth and fifth-place showings in the 60 meters with times of 6.91 and 6.92. The hurdles saw a pair of freshmen lead the Bulldogs with Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) finishing second in the women's race in 8.79 while Hudson Priebe (Chamberlain, S.D.) was fifth in the men's race in 8.48.

The Bulldogs return to action next weekend, Jan. 30-31, at the annual Jack Jennett Invitational in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
