TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 14 Arizona Wildcats knocked off the Drake softball team, 6-1, Thursday (Feb. 12) at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Senior Laura Brewer (Waukee, Iowa) led Drake (3-3) at the plate with a 1-for-3 performance with one run scored while sophomore Chelsea Blaylock (Des Moines, Iowa) and Sarah Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa) each added one hit as the Bulldogs finished with just three hits.
Senior pitcher Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) pitched six innings and allowed six runs on 11 hits as she took her second loss (2-2). She struck out three Wildcats.
Hailee Wilson paced Arizona (4-0) at the plate going 3-for-3 with one home run and two runs batted in. Her first inning home run put the Wildcats on the scoreboard. Later they grabbed control of the contest with four runs in the third inning with two of those runs coming on a home run from Katiyana Mauga.
The Bulldogs plated their only run in the top of fourth inning after Brewer scored on a error by the Arizona shortstop off a ball hit by Schmidt.
Drake opens Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational Friday against Loyola at 12 p.m. in the first of five scheduled games at the three-day tournament. The Bulldogs will then play San Jose State at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.
