Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A 17-0 second-half run by Indiana State allowed the Sycamores to cruise in the final minutes of a 75-54 victory over the Drake University men's basketball team Saturday afternoon at the Hulman Center.
Drake (8-18, 5-9 MVC) pulled within five points, 52-47, with 9:21 left in the contest before Indiana State (13-13, 9-5 MVC) went on its game-sealing run. That 17-point spurt was fueled by six Drake turnovers in less than five minutes. The Bulldogs finished the game with 18 turnovers that led to 22 points for the Sycamores, who shot 54.9 percent from the field in the victory.
“They are difficult to guard with four guards bouncing around out there,” said Drake head coach Ray Giacoletti. “You can't over help because once one rotation comes there's three or four more coming and they're going to make you pay at some point.”
Senior Trevor Berkeley (Tucker, Ga.) led the Bulldogs with a career-high 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the three-point arc with five rebounds. Freshman Reed Timmer (New Berlin, Wis.) added 14 points and five assists. The loss was just the second in the last six games for the Bulldogs.
Five Sycamores scored in double figures with Devonte Brown's 15 points, six assists and five rebounds leading the way. Drake won the first meeting between the two teams, 84-78, in Des Moines on Jan. 17.
Facing a nine-point, 34-25, halftime deficit, the Bulldogs kept pace in the opening minutes of the second half and slowly clawed within five points on a 6-0 run led by freshmen C.J. Rivers (Cahokia, Ill.) and Ore Arogundade (Chicago, Ill.). However, Drake turned the ball over on four of its next five possessions to start the ISU run.
“We had a number of possessions where we turned over and they got layups on the other end,” Giacoletti said. “We fought our way back but then could not execute at the end of the game.”
Indiana State led by as many as 18 points in the first half as the Sycamores were 6-of-11 from the three-point arc to generate that 34-25 halftime lead. The Bulldogs outscored ISU, 8-4, over the final four minutes of the period to make the deficit more manageable heading into the second half. Timmer and Berkeley each had eight points in the half with Berkeley hitting a pair of three-pointers in the final six minutes of the half. Drake committed 10 first-half turnovers and trailed by double-digits less than eight minutes into the period.
“We've made such strides since Christmas that to come out with no energy is disappointing,” Giacoletti said. “We made nice runs to end the half and then get it within five, but you need to consistently control the things you can control and we didn't have that energy.”
The Bulldogs return to the court on Tuesday evening at Evansville for a 7:05 p.m. contest against the Purple Aces. Drake won the first meeting between the two, 70-65, on Jan. 31 in Des Moines.
