TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 14 Arizona Wildcats shutout the Drake softball team, 8-0, in five innings on the final day of the Hillenbrand Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Drake to 6-5 on the season while Arizona improves to 9-0 as the Wildcats swept their home tournament.
Freshman Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) collected two hits to lead the Bulldogs at the plate. Senior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and sophomore Kaitlynn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) each added one hit.
Senior Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) wrapped up a strong trip to Arizona with the final hit off the Wildcats. Nybo went 7-for-18 in six games in Tucson, blasting three home runs along with one double with five runs batted in.
Schmidt pitched three innings allowing five runs on nine hits as her record falls to 3-4. Arizona outscored its opponents 55-5 in six wins to capture its home tournament.
Drake has an extended break before it returns to the diamond. The Bulldogs will next play a doubleheader at Austin Peay on Feb. 26 before they play four games at the Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. from Feb. 27-28.
