Women?s Tennis Collects A 4-3 Win Over Eastern Michigan

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Drake University women's tennis team won at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles while claiming the doubles point to earn a 4-3 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb.

“I'm very happy how we rebounded quickly from yesterday's loss,” said Drake head coach Sadhaf Pervez. “We were tougher mentally today in our singles matches and we were able to deal with our nerves better today because of yesterday's match against Nebraska.”

The Bulldogs picked up the doubles point with the teams of Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.)/Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) and Adrienne Jensen (Iowa City, Iowa)/Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.) each winning 6-3.

“We came out with high intensity in the doubles matches today and we carried that intensity into our singles matches,” Pervez said. “Our upperclassmen really stepped up as leaders today when things got tough in our match. I'm really proud of our team and how we competed today.”

Facing a 1-0 deficit heading into singles, EMU rallied take a lead by winning on courts Nos. 1, 2 and 3. However, Johnson picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 and Boyd added a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 for the Bulldogs to tie the match and make the No. 6 matchup pivotal.

That clinching match saw Eggleston fight back for a 7-5, 6-2, win to clinch the 4-3 team victory for the Bulldogs.

“I am really happy with how Jordan [Eggleston] held her composure when the match came down to her,” Pervez said. “She was down 2-5 in the first set and rallied back to get the first set.”

The Bulldogs went 1-1 on the weekend to improve their record to 4-1 this season. The squad returns to action next weekend with three matches at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Bulldogs take on Creighton on Saturday and North Dakota and Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday.

“This weekend has made our team stronger mentally,” Pervez said. “This was great experience for all three freshman to continue to grow as the season progresses.”
