LINCOLN, Neb. – The Drake University men's and women's track and field teams were led by strong performances in the 3,000 meters on the second day of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
The Bulldogs had six total runners competing in the two sections of the 3,000 meters with Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) finishing third in the men's special 3,000 meters with a time of 8:18.76. That time is the fifth fastest by a Missouri Valley Conference runner this season.
“Rob had an amazing meet,” said Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown. “He moved into position early and ran strong. It wasn't until the last couple of laps that he was passed. Reed [Fischer] raced and won the 3,000 meter college race and established a personal best.
Reed Fischer's (Minnetonka, Minn.) 8:32.22 finish to win the other section of the 3,000 meters shattered his previous best by nearly 10 seconds.
Drake experienced similar success in the 3,000 meters as Krista Maguire (Wausau, Wis.) finished third in the open 3,000 meters with a significant personal best of 9:56.22.
“Krista was the one to watch in the women's 3,000 meters,” Kaiser-Brown said. “She took the lead midway through the race and tried to hold on to that lead.”
In the special heat of the women's 3,000 meters, Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) was ninth in 10:08.04.
In those races, and throughout the weekend, the Bulldogs faced some of the nation's top teams and competitors in the ultra-competitive field.
“This meet is always an eye opener for us,” Kaiser-Brown said. “We were pitted against some of the nation's best and it is exciting to compete at that level.”
The Bulldogs also registered some strong showings in the sprints with Steven Jordan (McFarland, Wis.) recording an indoor personal best in the 400 meters with a time of 49.93. He also recorded a 22.23 mark in the 200 meters.
“Steven Jordan had a great weekend dipping under 50 seconds in the 400 meters,” Kaiser-Brown said. “Danyelle Cole also ran great and was near a personal best in the 60 meters.”
Cole finished just four one-hundreths of a second from her personal best with a time of 7.75 in the preliminary heats of the 60 meters. She also posted a 22.54 finish in the 200 meters.
The Bulldogs return to action next weekend at the nearby Iowa State Classic on Feb. 13-14.
