DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Laura Brewer (Waukee, Iowa) and sophomores Ashlie Chambers (Ankeny, Iowa) and Kaitlynn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) all launched two-run home runs as the Drake University softball team completed a series sweep over the Evansville Purple Aces with a 8-0 victory in five innings on Sunday (March 22) afternoon at Ron Buel Field.
Senior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) was lights out in the circle for Drake (14-11, 5-1 MVC) as Schmidt improved to 7-7 with the win. She allowed just one hit, a bunt single in the fifth, while striking out seven with just two walks and at the plate she had a double. Schmidt recorded her second one-hitter of the season with her dominant performance over Evansville (7-24, 1-5 MVC).
Finneran added a double and finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Chambers' home run was the first of her career as she recorded two runs batted in and two runs scored along with one walk.
Drake's two runs not from home runs came in the final inning. Freshman Kailee Smith (Murietta, Calif.) had a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Maddie Hooyman (Trenton, Mo.). Fellow freshman Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) ended the game early with a RBI single to bring in Finneran, who was hit by a pitch with one out.
The Bulldogs have a fast turnaround for their next game as they travel to play nationally ranked Kansas on Tuesday, March 24 at 6 p.m. Drake jumps back in to MVC action when it travels to Wichita State March 28-29 for three games.
