Hurdlers And Huston Lead Women's Track On Final Day Of MVC Championship

NORMAL, Ill. – The Drake University women's hurdlers and Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) combined to score in four events on the final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The women hurdlers' success came from Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.) finishing second in the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.63 while freshman Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) was seventh in 1:03.91. Earlier in the day, Young finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.71. She also ran legs on the team's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays that finished fifth and fourth, respectively.

“It is incredibly impressive for a first-year athlete to make the finals in two events, but to be all-conference is amazing,” Kaiser-Brown said of Young's debut season.

In the distance events, which faced strong winds, junior Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) continued her season of unparalleled consistency and competitiveness by scoring in two events. She opened her day with a third-place finish of 4:47.67 in the 1,500 meters and later finished fifth in the 5,000 meters in 17:27.61. In addition to her all conference accolades, she was also named the MVC Elite 18 Award winner, presented at each MVC Championship to the student-athlete in a final with the highest GPA. Huston maintains a 3.959 GPA in biology and is the third Drake track and field/cross country athlete to win the award this season.

Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas) won a Missouri Valley Conference title in the men's 400-meters to highlight a strong final day for the Drake University track and field teams on the final day of the MVC Outdoor Championship.

Asberry, a junior, finished in 51.95 to win the title while freshman teammate Hudson Priebe (Chamberlain, S.D.) was second in 52.32.

“Kai and Hudson positioned themselves for the win and they took advantage of that positioning,” said Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown.

The 100 meters generated significant points for the men's team with three scorers including Pierce Vincent (Fayetteville, Ga.) in 10.53 and Demetrius Shelton (Markham, Ill.) in fifth in 10.65.

Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) ended his MVC career with a fifth-place finish in the 5,000 meters in 14:59.02, two days after taking second in the 10,000 meters. James Saxton (La Crosse, Wis.) also scored on the oval with a sixth-place showing of 1:55.80 in the 800 meters.

In the team standings, the men's squad finished sixth with 80 points while the women's squad was seventh. The Bulldogs will compete next at the NCAA West Preliminary, May 28-30.
