Young Advances To Women?s 100-Meter Hurdle Quarterfinals at NCAA West Preliminary

AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Track And Field West Preliminary in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday evening at the University of Texas' Mike A. Meyers Stadium.

Competing in her first NCAA event, Young turned in her second-fastest time of the season, finishing in 13.43. Her time put her 20th out of the 48 preliminary competitors. The top the three finishers in each of the eight heats plus the next six fastest times advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal heats. Young finished fourth in her heat that was one of the fastest heats of the day. The top three finishers in Saturday's three quarterfinal heats plus the next three fastest times move on to the NCAA Championships.

Later in the evening, Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas), who advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday, competed in the second of three quarterfinal heats of the men's 400-meter hurdles. Asberry, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference champion in the event, finished 20th out of the 24 competitors with a time of 51.92.  

The Bulldogs wrap up competition at the NCAA West Preliminary on Saturday with competitors in four events. Kayla Bell (Bolingbrook, Ill.) leads off the competition in the women's triple jump at 1:30 p.m., followed by Johnathan Osifuye (Woodbury, Minn.) in the men's competition at 6 p.m.

Young will try to punch her ticket to Eugene, Ore., in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles at 7:05 p.m. Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) takes to the track an hour later in the women's 5,000 meters.
