ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drake University's Bayo Philips was named Missouri Valley Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Philips helped lead the Bulldogs to a 5-2 victory over No. 70 Utah State, in Drake's only match of the week. Philips teamed up with freshman Vinny Gillespie and put together an impressive 6-2 doubles victory at the No. 1 spot, as the Bulldogs went on to win last two doubles matches. Philips made is first career appearance at No. 2 singles and cruised past Utah State's Jonas Maier, 6-3, 6-1 to give Drake a 2-0 lead.

Philips and the rest of the Bulldogs head to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday for the ITA Kickoff event hosted by North Carolina. Drake will open the two-day event against N.C. State and then play either Indiana or North Carolina on Sunday.
