Box Score 2 CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Drake University softball team collected a pair of victories on the second day of the 2016 UNI-Dome Classic. Drake (3-0) held on to beat Omaha, 5-4, and then rallied to defeat Montana, 7-5, at the UNI-Dome on Saturday morning.
Against the Mavericks, the Bulldogs trailed 2-0, before a five-run second inning put them up 5-2. Two of the runs came on a double by sophomore
Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.) and another on a run-scoring single by senior
Ashlie Chambers (Ankeny, Iowa).
Junior
Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) earned the win in the circle. Smith tossed 5.2 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Junior
Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) collected the save by pitching 1.1 innings. Newman tallied three strikeouts and allowed just one walk.
Against the Bobcats, the Bulldogs fell behind again, this time by a score of 3-0, after one inning of play. Drake evened the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning with freshman
Sarah Maddox (Henderson, Nev.) continuing her hot start at the plate with a RBI double. Chambers added a sacrifice fly and junior
Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) had a RBI groundout.
Montana grabbed the lead back in the sixth inning scoring two runs on an error by Drake. The Bulldogs completed the comeback with four runs in the final frame. Freshman
Mandi Roemmich (West Des Moines, Iowa) blasted a RBI double to drive one of the runs in and the other three runs came on a fielder's choice and groundout.
Newman earned her second win of the season. She came on in relief and allowed two runs with seven strikeouts.
Drake closes the UNI-Dome Classic on Sunday with one game against South Dakota State at 12:30 p.m. and another one against Wisconsin at 5 p.m.
