LINCOLN, Neb. - Drake University junior Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) recorded the fastest 60-meter hurdle time of her career on Friday evening during the first day of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
 
Young's time of 8.48 in the preliminary heats narrowly bettered her previous best, ranks as the fourth-fastest time in Drake history and is currently the third fastest time in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.
 
Her performance was the seventh fastest of the day to advance her to Saturday's finals where she will race against competitors from Texas, Kentucky and UNLV.
 
The men's team's performances on Friday were highlighted by senior Bas Van Leersum (Zandaam, The Netherlands) finishing seventh in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 48.15. That time currently ranks as the second fastest in the MVC this season. His time was bested only by competitors for Texas, Nebraska and Iowa State as the Bulldogs are up against some of their toughest competition of the season this weekend.
 
The 35-team field includes No. 11 Kansas, No. 13 Stanford and No. 16 Texas on the men's side and No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Kentucky and No. 18 Kansas State in the women's field.
 
The competition against those top teams resumes on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. In addition to those competing at Nebraska, senior Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) will race against some of the best runners in the country in the 3,000 meters at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind., Saturday.
