SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Drake University men's tennis team was setback by San Diego, 4-2, in the opening round of the San Diego Spring Break Tournament on Thursday at the Hogan Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs went up 1-0 by winning the doubles point. Sophomores
Vinny Gillespie and
Tom Hands defeated Gui Osorio and Joel Gamerov 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, while juniors
Calum MacGeoch and
Ben Stride secured the point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Toreros tied it up at 1-1 with a win at No. 2 singles, but MacGeoch put Drake back on top with a dominating performance over Joshua Page, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
USD managed to take a 3-2 advantage with victories at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively.
Alexandros Araozos clinched the match for the Toreros by defeating
Bayo Philips, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.
The Bulldogs will square off against Arizona in a consolation match on Friday at the Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego.
