WATERLOO, Iowa – The Drake University women's tennis team dropped its Missouri Valley Conference opening match to Northern Iowa, 4-3, on Saturday at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
 
The Bulldogs swept all three matches to claim the doubles point. Juniors Summer Brills and Mela Jaglarz topped Eve Small and Savanna Hunt, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles, while Joely Lomas and Alex Kozlowski also earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point. Tess Herder and Kenya Williams completed the sweep with a 7-5 win at No. 1.
 
The Panthers went on to earn a pair of straight set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Brills overcame from being down a set to beat Jieke Stroobant, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Lomas grinded out a tough three-set victory over Sydney Wolfe, 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-3 to give Drake its third team point.
 
Herder would fall to Astrid Santos, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) at No. 2, while Williams was setback in three sets to Gisela Kemper, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
 
The Bulldogs return the Roger Knapp Tennis Center on Saturday, April 8 when they host defending MVC champions Wichita State.
