IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Drake University cross country teams opened their 2018 season with a pair of sixth-place team finishes at the Hawkeye Invitational Friday, Aug. 31, evening at the University of Iowa's Ashton Cross Country Course.
Iowa State ran away with both the men's and women's team titles with 15 and 24 points, respectively. Drake's men earned 178 points in the six-team field while Drake's women scored 164 points.
Sophomore Millie Bretl (Milwaukee, Wis.) was the Bulldogs' top finisher on the day with a 28th place finish and a time of 15:22.7 in the women's 4-kilometer race. Iowa's Andrea Shine won the event in 14:07.2 to best the 57-runner field.
Rachel Selva (Columbia, Mo.) was the second Bulldog across the finish line in 32nd place with a time of 15:35.1.
Drake's men were paced by junior Matt Cozine (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) in 34th place with a time of 19:34.5 on the 6-kilometer course.
Xavier Lechleitner (Edgar, Wis.) followed in 41st with a time of 19:50.3. Iowa State's Festus Lagat won the 73-runner event in 18:30.7.
The Bulldogs continue their early season competitions next week when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the annual Oz Memorial Sept. 7
