DES MOINES, Iowa –The Drake University men's tennis team went 3-0 this weekend after it edged UCSB, 4-3, Sunday night at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
 
Drake's (7-3) win over UCSB (3-3) capped the perfect weekend at home combined with victories over Utah State and Indiana.
 
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles points despite dropping the first match. Tom Hands/Calum MacGeoch won the No. 3 match 6-3 and then Vinny Gillespie/Barny Thorold clinched the point with their victory in the No. 1 match 6-4.
 
In singles action, Drake went up 2-0 after Phillips cruised to his win in the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-4. However, UCSB evened the match with wins in the No. 3 and No. 5 matches. Hall then won the No. 6 match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, but Gillespie fell in a close No. 1 battle. Hands then rallied in the No. 2 match 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 to secure the victory.
 
Drake continues its homestand when Oregon and Omaha visit Feb. 22, for noon and 6 p.m. matches, respectively.
