Kelly Leads Drake Track & Field Friday At The Drake Relays Presented by Hy-Vee

Bulldogs aim to finish action Saturday at the Blue Oval

DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake University senior Kevin Kelly ran the fifth-fastest 1,500 meters in school history and the fastest by a Bulldog in 16 years Friday evening at the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee.

Kelly finished in 3:44.72 and held the lead in the race with 400 meters to go before Wichita State's Zack Penrod pulled away for the win.

Kelly's historic time and personal best was one of series of strong performances by the Bulldogs against some of the nation's best teams during the first two days of the 110th Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee.

The men's sprinters continued to excel as Kundai Maguranyanga finished 11th in the 200 meters in 21.35. Earlier in the day, Aobakwe Malau posted a season-best time of 10.62 in the 100-meter preliminary heats.

Those two also teamed with Aaron Chier and Viktor Peka to turn in a preliminary time of 40.90 in the qualifying heats of the 4x100-meter relay.

Also on the track, Victoria Coombe posted a season-best of 1:02.24 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish 16th.
