CARTER LAKE, Iowa – The Drake University rowing team defeated Creighton in three races Saturday morning on Carter Lake in the annual spring dual race between the longtime rivals.
Drake beat Creighton in the varsity 8+, 2
nd varsity 8+ and the varsity 4+ races. The Bulldogs' 2
nd varsity 4+ boat finished third in their race. The two longtime foes raced each other for the first time this school year after their annual fall meeting in Des Moines was cancelled due to high water on the Des Moines River.
"I'm so proud of the how well everyone performed today," said head coach
Charlie DiSilvestro. "They all muscled past some very fast boats and I'm really pleased with the varsity 4 because they haven't had the chance to row in the four boats much and being a smaller boat, it takes more technique which they showed. The 2
nd varsity competed with seven novices and two varsity members and did a great job. In the varsity boat, Melanie (Dahlstrom) stepped in and helped muscle them going. Our cox's handled very well a tough crosswind and they did great job of getting their crews ready to go on the line. Overall just really proud of everyone today and excited to once again be out on the water."
Drake competes next at the ICRI hosted by the University of Illinois Rowing clubs on Saturday, April 13 at Clinton Lake.
