Gillespie Named Summit League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Senior earns the honor for the third time this season.

Drake University senior Vinny Gillespie has been named the Summit League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced Tuesday, April 9.

Gillespie had a pair of straight-set wins at No. 1 singles to help the Bulldogs go 2-0 last week with a league win over Valparaiso. In the Bulldogs' 6-1 win at Valparaiso, he defeated the then reigning Summit League Player of the Week Brandon Ancona to give Ancona just his fifth loss of the season. Gillespie prevailed in that match, 6-1, 6-0.

That same day, Gillespie powered through a 6-1, 7-5 win over DePaul's Boris Spanjaard to give the Bulldogs their second win of the day.

He was also undefeated in doubles action at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3 and a 6-1 win as he teamed up with Bayo Philips.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to close out their regular season this weekend with an April 13 match at Old Dominion.
