AMES, Iowa – The Drake University track & field teams had two all-time top-10 performances on the first day of the Iowa State Classic Friday evening at the Lied Recreation Center.
Friday's action featured limited competitions in the field and distance events with the bulk of the events taking place Saturday afternoon.
However, the Bulldogs got two standout performances in those events from
Joey Harkins and
Isaac Basten.
Harkins uncorked a personal best of personal best of 64-3.75 (19.60m) in the weight throw to improve his position in second on the Drake all-time list in the event. His throw came on his third of six throws to finish fifth in the talented field of national competitors with the third-best throw in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.
Ethan Marshall also recorded a personal best of nearly two feet in the event with a throw of 52-2.5 (15.91m) while freshman
Austin Jentz bettered his personal best by more than a foot.
On the track, sophomore
Isaac Basten shined again as he recorded the sixth-best performance in the 5,000 meters on Drake's all-time list. The reigning MVC Freshman of the Year and 3,000-meter champion finished in 14:33.13 to take 10
th place in another extremely deep and skilled field of competitors. He was trailed by
Jack Zettl in 15
th in 15:17.25 in his first collegiate 5,000 meters.
The Bulldogs also have three top-10 finishers in the 1,000 meters as
Jack Burns,
Rylee Miller and
Reece Knepper finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
The remainder of the Bulldogs will compete tomorrow in the Iowa State Classic starting at noon Saturday.
