Track & Field Has Historic Close To MVC Championship

Drake men record highest finish since 1974 and most champions since 1933

The Drake University men's track & field team recorded one of its best showings ever at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Sunday afternoon in Carbondale, Ill. The team finished third in the team standings with 135 points and seven individual champions.

The Bulldogs' third-place showing was their highest since 1974 and the 135 points were the second-most in program history and most since 1968. Drake's seven individual champions were its most since 1933 and tied for the second-most in Drake history.

All-American Adam Fogg helped score 30 of those points with three individual titles, the most by a Bulldog since 1933 as he completed the improbable sweep of the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He opened the three-day championship by winning the 10,000 meters Friday while qualifying for the 1,500 meters. Sunday afternoon, he returned to the oval to win 1,500 meters in 3:09.99 and just hours later won the 5,000 meters in 14:23.03.

His triple crown made him just the second student-athlete in MVC history to sweep all three events as he was named the Championship's Most Valuable Performer. It is just the second time a Bulldog has earned the honor.

Fogg wasn't the only multi-winner Sunday as senior Cloud Masibhera won his fifth career MVC crown with his second-straight outdoor triple jump title in 49-6.25 (15.09m). Saturday, he won his fourth title with a long jump championship. Masibhera's triple jump mark is the sixth-best in program history and he remains the only Bulldog to win an outdoor triple jump title and only one to sweep the horizontal jumps.

David Olowookere added to the Bulldogs' title haul by winning the 400-meter hurdles in 50.81, the fourth-fastest time in school history. Olowookere was named the MVC Most Outstanding Track & Field Athlete for recording the performance that ranks highest nationally. Olowookere's time currently ranks 23rd nationally.

On Friday, Will Tsai won Drake's first javelin title to 1971 to win the first of the Drake men's team's seven titles.

Drake's women's team had two individual champions Sunday as well to finish in seventh place.

Yinka Mary Ajayi won her first outdoor title in the 400 meters after back-to-back indoor titles with a 53.48 finish that ranks as the second-fastest in program history and just .06 off the school record as she is the first Drake student-athlete to win the event since 1984.

In the next-to-last women's event of the MVC Championship, senior Elizabeth Aho darted past the field in the final 200 meters to win the 5,000 meters in 17:11.99.

Four Bulldogs collected individual All-MVC honors, with Gal Arad leading the way thanks to a second-place finish in the 200 meters and third-place showing in the 100 meters. He also ran the anchor leg of the Bulldogs' second-place 4x100-meter relay. For his efforts, he was named the MVC's Freshman of the Year.

In the men's 5,000 meters, Maximilian Fridrich finished third while Busiwa Asinga was second in the women's 400-meter hurdles to earn podium finishes for the Bulldogs.
