CHICAGO -- The Drake University track & field programs saw multiple student-athletes earn spots on the podium and move onto finals during day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at Gately Park on Sunday (Feb. 27).
Jaymie O'Connor won the first gold medal of the day after compiling 3,357 points in the women's pentathlon (60 hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 meter run). That score ranks seventh in the Drake women's indoor track & field record book.
Brooke Mullins took second place in the women's 5000 meter run with a personal record of 16:37.03, which ranks second in the Drake women's indoor track & field record book.
Jack Zettl also turned in a PR (14:27.69) in the men's 5000 meter run for fifth place as well as fifth all-time in the Drake men's indoor track & field record book.
Joey Harkins also earned a silver medal in the men's weight throw with a top toss of 19.95 meters, which now ranks third in the Drake men's indoor track & field record book.
Ethan Marshall finished in fifth place with a weight throw of 18.97 meters.
Cloud Masibhera found a place on the podium in the long jump with a bronze medal after leaping 7.40 meters, which ranks seventh in the Drake men's indoor track & field record book.
Victor Peka (6.92) qualified for the men's 60 meter dash finals. O'Connor (8.66) and
Maria Patron (8.96) advanced after the 60 meter hurdles prelims on the women's side and
Nicholas Wessels (8.28) did the same in the men's 60 meter hurdles.
Busiwa Asinga (24.67) advanced following the women's 200 meter dash.
Briandrias Rhodes (56.21) won the women's 400 meter dash prelims along with Asinga (56.44).
Caleb Lerus moved on after recording a time of 48.99 in the men's 400 meter dash.
Emilie Meyer qualified for the final in the women's 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.03.
Adam Fogg (4:13.55) and
Isaac Basten (4:15.56) finished first and second in the prelims to qualify for the men's 1 mile run finals.
The second and final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships will take place on Monday (Feb. 28).
