Basten Breaks Mile Record in Boston, Drake Track & Field Shows Steady Progress at SDSU Indoor Classic

Isaac Basten bested his own indoor mile program record while the Bulldogs recorded season and personal bests in South Dakota.

Isaac Basten continued to rewrite the Drake record book while in Boston on Saturday (Feb. 11) as the Drake track & field team displayed consistent improvement at the South Dakota State Indoor Classic this weekend.

"It was a good day to be a Bulldog," head coach Jay Koloseus said. "We are proud to collect so many personal and season records. Every event area was well represented again at South Dakota State. A special shoutout goes out to Isaac Basten for setting a new school record in the mile."
 
David Hemery Valentine Invitational (Feb. 11)
In Boston, Isaac Basten obliterated his own program record with an indoor mile time of 3:54.89 for a seventh place overall finish. Basten was third amongst collegiate competitors as his time guaranteed him a spot at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships marking the seventh consecutive time that Drake track & field has qualified for an NCAA Championship event.

South Dakota State Indoor Classic (Feb. 10-11)
The distance runners shined on Friday night in Brookings, S.D., highlighted by Brooke Mullins' third place finish in the women's 3000m with a time of 9:50.03.
 
Juan Trasobares finished 10th in the men's 3000m (8:25.37) before he would set his personal record in the mile (4:12.57) the next day.
 
Katherine Lawson turned in a PR of 17:38.10 in the women's 5000m. The Drake women's distance medley team of Gracie Shannon, Hannah Behunin, Emilie Meyer and Barbara Vrhovac took second with a combined time of 11:51.82.
 
Anthony Barmes bested his previous personal record in the weight throw (67-5 ¼) to win the event and remain second in the Drake men's indoor record book.
 
Centaine Noom-Duckworth impressed in the women's weight throw for a seventh place finish (56-5 3/4) for a PR that has her third in the Drake women's indoor record book.
 
Freshman Cooper Cerese set a new PR of 51-5 ¾ in the men's shot put.
 
Emile Meyer took fourth in the women's mile (4:54.67) for a personal best while Hannah Behunin also finished fourth in the women's 800m (2:14.81). Briandrias Rhodes finished 10th in the women's 200m (25.01).

Drake track & field will make another trip to Lincoln, Neb., for the Nebraska Tune-Up on Friday, Feb. 17.
