WATERLOO, Ill. -- Drake women's golf (329-322--309--960) ended the MVC Championships at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill., with its best round of the tournament on Tuesday, April 18. Drake finished sixth in the team standings, just four strokes back of Illinois State (960) for fifth while Missouri State (315-315-313--943) won the team title.
"Our team had the third lowest round of the day," head coach
Steve Smith said. "I am so proud of these ladies for continuing to play their hearts out through the tough conditions all tournament."
With incredible chipping,
Kristen Giles (78-78-75--231) forced a three-person playoff with Payton Carter of Murray State and Kate Petrova of Evansville. All three golfers made par on the first playoff hole before Petrova pulled ahead on the second playoff hole to earn medalist honors as Giles claimed runner-up honors. Giles was the 2022 MVC Championships medalist, just narrowly missing a repeat.
Aayushi Sarkar (80-84-76--240) bettered her second round score by eight strokes to finish in 19th place overall.
Rylee Heryford (83-79-82--244) was next in the Drake lineup and ended in a tie for 27th.
Amber Henson (88-81-78--248) had a hole-in-one on Hole 15 using a 7-iron on the 160-yard hole to record already lthe second hole-in-one in her career and the second on record at the MVC championship. It marks the first hole-in-one at the women's golf championship since Emily Dixon of Indiana State had an ace in 2010.
Kelly Kavanagh (92-85-79--248) has her best round of the tournament to round out the Drake lineup.
The Bulldogs have concluded the 2022-23 campaign.
