DES MOINES, Iowa. – The Drake track and field team had another solid weekend with some impressive figures at two separate events. The bulk of the Bulldog squad went to Iowa City for the Hawkeyes' Iowa Open while a select duo traveled to South Bend, Ind. for the Alex Wilson Invite hosted by Notre Dame.
Iowa Open
"The Iowa Open was the tune up we hoped for prior to MVCs," said head coach
Jay Koloseus. "The competition produced 24 personal records. I was especially pleased with the sprints and jumps group which saw nearly all our athletes produce a season best or personal best. Coach [Laron] Brown has that group peaking at the right time."
That sprints and jumps group was led by a trio of third place finishes from
Malachi Collier in the men's long jump (6.8m/22'-3"),
Drake Dombrosky in the men's 200 (22.31) and Emmaline Nau in the women's 60m hurdles (9.17). The trio of
Denae McElrath (7.89),
Favor Omoijuanfo (7.98), and
Leah Duncan (8.08) went back-to-back-to-back for respective finishes of fourth, fifth, and sixth in the women's 60m dash. Other sprint and jump results included
Dylan DeAngelo's sixth-place 400m time of 50.34, McElrath and
Madison Bunton finishing in succession with respective times of 26.05 and 26.07 in the women's 200, and
Zofia Landowska with a long jump of 5.18m/16'-11.75".
Dyer Jarabek rounded out the shorter races for the Drake men with a 400 time of 51.10, good enough for eighth place.
Briandrias Rhodes provided the highlight of the sprints and jumps group with an individual win in the women's 200m dash. She scurried across the line in 25.05 to take the top spot.
Elsewhere, both
Aidan Palmer and
Juan Trasobares picked up individual titles. Palmer earned his with an 8:26.31 3000m run. Trasobares ran the men's mile in 4:07.66 to garner his crown.
Aziz Jdai finished third in the men's 3000m with a pace of 8:39.62. The Bulldogs' effort on the track was concluded by
Gracie Shannon's seventh-place 800 (2:17.91) and
Brendan Cain's eighth-place mile (4:14.28)
The Drake throwers also had a positive day as
Centaine Noom-Duckworth (19.07m/62'-6.75") and
Ethan Elliott (17.66m/57'11.25") took runner-up status in the women's weight throw and men's shot put, respectively.
Cooper Cerese added a fourth-place result (16.58m/54'-4.75") in the men's shot put while
Maud Visscher came in sixth (16.56m/54'-4") in the women's weight throw.
Visscher added an eighth-place positioning in the women's shot put (13.55m/44'-5.5") while Elliott finished in the same rank among the men's weight throw field after tossing 17.46m/57'-3.25").
Lara Smits (15.18m/49'-9.5") and
Sam Carpenter (19.41m/63'-8") took third in the women's shot and fourth in the men's weight throw, respectively.
Alex Wilson Invite
The pair of
Emilie Meyer and
Harrison Martinenko were the only two Bulldogs to travel to the Hoosier State for Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invite, but both left after a successful stint.
Martinenko posted a third-place finish in the men's mile with a time of 4:02.75 while Meyer bested her own program record to win the women's 800m run in 2:06.34.
The Bulldogs will now their attention toward the MVC Indoor Championships from Mar. 2-3 in Chicago.
