Box Score TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Drake softball team wrapped up its time at the Easton Bama Bash on Sunday afternoon closing out the weekend with a single game against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. The Bulldogs avenged their loss to Southern Utah from Friday with a 3-1 victory.
After Southern Utah claimed an early lead, the Bulldogs had an immediate response and jumped ahead, 2-1, in the first. Drake loaded the bases following a pair of walks and a Frankie Rita single to give freshman Ava Curry an opportunity. Curry capitalized with a base knock to left field, which drove in two runs.
Drake struck again in the third inning to increase its lead. Rita began the inning sending a single to center field and came around to score in the next at-bat off an RBI double down the left field line by Emma Dighton.
The 3-1 score proved to be the final with Paige Bedsworth keeping the Thunderbird bats in-check. Bedsworth earned the win and finished with a complete game allowing only three hits and picking up three strikeouts.
Rita paced the Bulldogs offensively going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Curry also ended her day with a multi-hit outing with a 2-for-3 performance. Bedsworth and Rita were also named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts over the weekend.
Drake returns to action next weekend from Tulsa, Oklahoma, when it takes on Kansas City and Tulsa Feb. 28-March 1. The Bulldogs will also go up against Oklahoma State on Sunday, March 2 from Stillwater, Okla.
