Drake Men Sweep Sunday Doubleheader

Bulldogs dominate Grand View, William Woods to extend winning streak to six matches

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake men's tennis welcomed NAIA foes Grand View and William Woods to campus on Sunday and successfully dispatched a pair of comfortable victories. Drake completed a pair of 7-0 shutouts over the Vikings and Owls, continuing their historic winning streak.

Sunday's action started in dominant fashion for the Drake men's tennis squad. The Bulldogs made quick work of their fellow 515ers with a 6-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot by Adan Tarquino and Ulysse Verrando before a 6-2 victory in the third position by Francisco Landeras and Max Goldemberg.

The Drake domination continued in singles play as all six Drake wins came in straight sets. Menon and Alex Yeager did their thing in the top two matches, respectively. Tarquino and Goldemberg added two more convincing triumphs at Nos. 3 and 4. Finally, Verrando and Landeras provided more production at the bottom of the Bulldog lineup with two more wins.

The Drake win over Grand View marked the Bulldogs' fifth consecutive win.

The Bulldogs replicated their morning performance with another 7-0 shutout of William Woods in the afternoon affair at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

The Verrando/Tarquino pairing again got Drake off to a solid start with a 6-2 win in the No. 2 doubles slot. William Woods was able to pick up a win in the No. 1 doubles bout, but Jose Alessandro Hernandez and Sam Melaga combined forces for a win on the third court to secure the doubles win for Drake.

Singles action was all Drake from the jump. Alan Gonzalez won via retirement in the top spot to start things off. Melaga and Yeager followed suit with wins in consecutive sets. Tarquino, Ben Johnson, and Menon complete the Drake singles sweep with Menon's match the only one to reach a third frame.

The Bulldogs completed their second 7-0 blanking of the day, improving their record to 6-2 on the season. The win over the Owls marked Drake's sixth straight victory, its longest streak since the 2018 season.

"The guys were very focused today from start to finish in each match," Drake head coach Justin Stuckey said. "It was good to see them do the things in the matches we were working on in practice."

Drake will return to competition next week with a Feb. 20 clash against Chicago State before Saint Louis visits Des Moines on Feb. 21.
