IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Drake University track and field team competed at the Iowa Open in Iowa City today with several Bulldogs performing well. Five Drake representative stood atop the podium as individual champions to highlight a successful day in Johnson County.
The Bulldog men produced a pair of title takers on the track as freshman
John Moellers, a Marshalltown native, won the 3000 with a personal record of 8:23.06.
Carter Beasley also took top honors in the mile with his own personal best of 4:06.73.
The men's 3000 featured a few other Drake runners inside the top five as
Aidan Palmer (8:23.17) took second,
Daniel Rotich (8:27.82) finished in third, and
Jed Wilson (8:46.37) crossed in fifth.
The men's mile was also littered with blue and white as
Xander Kwa (4:11.47) ran a personal record for runner-up status,
Lanse Larsen (4:12.35) posted a fourth-place result, and
Daghyn True (4:14.13) added another P.R. for sixth.
Kayci Martensen was the lone winner among Drake's women's tracksters with a first-place finish in the women's 800. Martensen finished ahead of the field with a personal record time of 2:14.03.
Drake also boasted two winners in the field events as
Ethan Elliott and
Chinemerem Iwuagwu each tossed personal bests. Elliott won the men's shot put with a throw of 18.89m/61-11 3/4 while Iwuagwu heaved 18.58m/60-11 1/2 to secure the women's weight throw crown.
Elsewhere amongst the field event participants,
Maud Visscher was the runner-up in the women's shot put at 15.04m/49-4 1/4 and took sixth in the women's weight throw as 16.54m/54-3 1/4. Previous MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Sam Carpenter took fourth in the men's weight throw (21.76m/71-4 3/4), just one placement ahead of teammate
Adam Phillips (21.57m/70-9 1/4).
Sprinters
Sophia Bleich and
Josiah Rainey both took third-place honors in the women's 600 and men's 60, respectively. Bleich ran a 1:43.13 while Rainey posted a personal best of 6.77.
Drew Boyd earned fourth in the men's 600 with a pace of 1:27.60 while 800 runners
Gaven Corpin (1:54.93) and
Ella Brown (2:17.63) collected fifth place status.
Drake Dombrosky added another top five finish with a mark of 22.12 in the men's 200.
Lastly,
Sophia Agan's P.R. of 10:34.23 and
Anastasia Kirillov's time of 4:55.34 garnered sixth in the women's 3000 and women's mile, respectively.
Drake's next action will be accompanied by higher stakes as the 2026 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships are on deck. The Bulldogs will travel to Indianapolis from Mar. 1-2 with league titles up for grabs.
