Bulldogs Split Sunday Doubleheader in Colorado

Drake defeats South Dakota State, but falls to CSU in day two of Colorado State Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Drake softball team continued its weekend in the Rocky Mountain state and traveled to Fort Collins, Colorado, for a doubleheader against South Dakota State and Colorado State on Sunday. The Bulldogs avenged their loss to the Jackrabbits from yesterday with a 5-3 victory but fell to the Rams by a score of 1-0.

Drake 5, South Dakota State 3
Drake grabbed the early lead over South Dakota State as freshman Pearson Hall drove in the first run of the game with a base knock in the top of the first. Hall's next at bat in the third inning extended the Bulldog lead to 3-0 as she belted her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center.

The Jackrabbits got a run back in the bottom of the third with a solo home run, but Drake countered with another multi-run inning in the fourth. Ava Husak, who also got the start in the pitchers circle, helped her own cause with an RBI single, which scored Natalee Watts. A couple of batters later, Colorado native Tatum Aragon provided a productive at-bat with an RBI groundout.

With the score now at 5-1 Drake just had to survive a rally from the Jackrabbits over the final three innings. The rally by SDSU started to form in the fifth when the Jacks scored two runs off another solo homer and a sacrifice fly, but Cassidy Gall was brought in from the bullpen and put an end to the comeback attempt.

Gall tossed two scoreless innings with no hits allowed and just one walk to pick up the save and put an end to the Bulldogs' losing streak.

Colorado State 1, Drake 0
The offense was hard to find in the second game of the day as there was only one hit between Drake and Colorado State after three innings of play. That hit came from the Rams in the second inning.
Drake finally recorded its first hit of the game in the fourth when Frankie Rita poked a base knock through the left side of the infield. The Bulldogs then followed with a pair of singles in the frame by Aragon and Ava Curry, but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.

When the fourth inning flipped to the home half, Colorado State went ahead. Peyton Driscoll had been dealing from the pitchers circle for Drake, but Jailey Wilson got the better of her and produced the only run of the game with a solo home run to right field.

Drake will play one more game as part of the Colorado State Tournament going up against the Rams again on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am CT.
