DES MOINES, IOWA Armin Mujdzic took a drive from midfield to goal less than a minute into the second half to give Grand View its third ever regular season win over the Drake mens soccer team, 1-0, at the Cownie Soccer Complex Wednesday night.
Drake, which slumped into a 3-4 record, lost to the Vikings for the first time since the Bulldogs inaugural season in 1986 when Grand View earned two victories, 4-0 and 2-1, over the Bulldogs.
I think Grand View gave a terrific effort and capitalized on a good chance, said Drake head coach Sean Holmes. Unfortunately in a soccer match you can dominate statistically and not get the result you want. In that way it is both beautiful and perverse.
Losing Nickell in the early minutes of the game and already down a couple of other starters, proves that we are not as deep as we would like to be. If we consider all our pre-conference games a form of preparation for the rigors of conference play, then there are some valuable lessons learned tonight. We were too casual in our approach the game and got punished for it. Full credit to Grand View.
The Bulldogs out shot Grand View, 23-8, allowing the Vikings just four shots in each half. Drake also accumulated 13 corner kick opportunities, but was not able to capitalize.
Drake sophomore midfielders Besmir Bega (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Point North and
Peter Kariotis (Liberty, Mo.) organized Drakes attack after senior forward Matt Nickell (Waukee) was sidelined after playing less than 20 minutes of the first half. Bega had a team-high five shots, while Kariotis followed with four attempts, landing three shots on goal.
Grand View, which improved to 6-3, made its sparse scoring opportunities count, landing six shots on goal. Vikings goalkeeper Martos Rastislav collected 10 saves to earn the shutout.
Drake, in the midst of a six-game homestand, will host DePaul in a 7 p.m. match Saturday at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
