Women's Golf Team At Iowa Invitational

WHAT'S AHEAD: The Drake women's golf team will compete in the Hawkeye Invitational at the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa, this Saturday and Sunday.

LANSING TO DEFEND TITLE: Then Drake junior Olivia Lansing (Dellwood, Minn.) posted a final round three-over-par 75 to capture individual honors at the 2008 Hawkeye Invitational. Lansing fired a birdie on the par-five No. 6 hole to close out the tournament with a 71-76-75=222 to win by three strokes over Mary Carmody from Longwood, who had a 77-75-73=225.

Drake finished eighth in the 15-team tournament with a 316-318-319=953. Ball State captured the team championship with a 309-303-309=921.

A LOOK BACK: The Drake women's golf team finished seventh in the 15-team LPGA Xavier Invitational Sunday (Oct. 11)  in Daytona Beach, Fla., with a 304-311-310=925. Daytona State College won the tournament with a 295-288-298=881, while Campbell was second at 298-297-293=888.

Senior Olivia Lansing (Dellwood, Minn.) tied for 14th to pace the Drake contingent with a 75-73-77=225, finishing nine over par.

Senior Elena Vukmir (Wauwatosa, Wis.) posted the best final round of any Drake golfer with a four-over-par 76. She placed 28th overall with a 74-79-76=229. Drake senior Kelly Godwin (Centerville, Minn.) tied for 40th at 79-78-77=234, while senior Amanda Vogt (Melbourne, Iowa) had a 76-81-80=237 to tie for 41st.  Junior Michelle Mathwick (Greenfield, Wis.) placed 71st with an 80-81-86=247.

ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLAR TEAM: Drake's Olivia Lansing, Michelle Mathwick and Elena Vukmir have been named to the 2008-09 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team for Division I.

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

 Lansing is a graphic design and magazine journalism major. Vukmir is a finance and management double major, while Mathwick is an actuarial science major.

DRAKE LEADERS: Olivia Lansing paces the Drake women's golf team this fall with a 74.6 stroke average based on eight rounds. Elena Vukmir has a 78.3 stroke average, followed by Michelle Mathwick at 78.5 average and Kelly Godwin at 78.6.
