Softball Team Splits With Creighton

OMAHA, NEB. ? The Drake softball team (24-16, 9-4 MVC) collected 11 hits en route to a 4-2 Missouri Valley Conference win over Creighton in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday (April 15). The Bluejays won the first game, 2-1.

The win snapped a six-game regular-season losing streak to Creighton. The Bulldogs defeated top-seeded Creighton, 3-2, in the MVC tournament last season.

The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning, beginning with junior Elena Leon's (West Des Moines/Valley) home run to right center field.

Freshman Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) then doubled to right center field and sophomore Erin Bly (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) singled through the right side giving the Bulldogs a first and third situation. Sophomore Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene) bunted Craddock home and junior Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines, Iowa/East) singled up the middle, scoring Bly to give Drake a 3-0 lead.

Creighton scored in the third inning to come within two runs, 3-1.

Bly connected for her third hit of the game with a home run to left field in the fifth inning to account for Drake's final run of the game.

Creighton scored one in the seventh and had the bases loaded before DeLong, in relief of Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) , struck out the final two Bluejay batters of the game, recording her first career save.

With the win, Dordel improved to 9-7. She struck out six and allowed six hits in six innings of action.

Bly recorded her 11th multiple-hit game of the season, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Leon went 2-for-3, including her 10th home run of the season.

Sophomore Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) put Drake up 1-0 in the third inning of the first game with a home run to left field and junior  Kelsey Kahler (North Liberty, Iowa/Clear Creek-Amana) followed with a single through the right side for the Bulldogs only hits of the game.

Creighton tied the game in the fourth and scored the game-winner in the sixth on a Renae Sinkler home run to left center.

DeLong struck out 11 and allowed four hits in the loss.

The Bulldogs travel to Peoria, Ill. to face Bradley in a three-game series schedule for Saturday (April 18) and Sunday (April 19). Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game will begin at 12 p.m.
