CLEARWATER, FLA. -
The Drake University softball team swept its two-game Sunday ledger at the USF
Under Armour Invitational, earning a 6-1 victory over New Mexico State in the
early game and taking a 4-0 win over Long Island in the nightcap.
Pitching ruled the day for the Bulldogs, as juniors Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) and
Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.)
combined to allow a single, unearned run and just eight hits in the two
victories. DeLong opened the day allowing four hits and the unearned run while
striking out six in a complete game, 6-1 victory over the Aggies. Dordel
notched her third shutout of the season with a four-hit, nine-strikeout,
complete game effort in the 4-0 nightcap win over Long Island.
Both pitchers stand at 6-3 on the season.
Offensively, freshman Lindsey Vande Wall (Prairie City, Iowa) drove in four on the day,
including three with a fifth-inning three-run shot to centerfield against New
Mexico State. Sophomore Torey Craddock
(Tucson, Ariz.) scored the first Bulldog run of the day on a second-inning solo
shot against the Aggies, then crossed the plate in the sixth against Long
Island on a two-run shot by junior Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.).
Mollohan had four hits on the day.
The pair of wins put Drake at 12-6 overall.
The Bulldogs meet South Florida Tuesday in a doubleheader
starting at 4 p.m. Central Time.
