CEDAR FALLS, IOWA -
The Drake University softball team swept a Missouri Valley Conference
doubleheader with UNI, Saturday; topping the Panthers 5-1 in the opener
and 3-1
in game two.
The Bulldogs used a five-run fifth and a
four-hit
performance from junior Brynne Dordel
(Chanhassen, Minn.) to earn a 5-1 opening game victory over the
Panthers.
Senior Carrie Hatfield (Des Moines,
Iowa) knocked UNI pitcher Jen Larsen out of the game with two outs in
the fifth
with a two-run shot to left field, her first of the season and third of
her
career.
Elena Leon
(West Des Moines, Iowa), Lindsey Vande
Wall (Prairie City, Iowa), Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.) and Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) all crossed the plate in the fifth with
Hatfield.
Dordel ceded a single run to the Panthers while
turning
in a complete game, four-hit, seven strikeout effort to move her record
to a
team-best 12-4 overall.
Pitcher Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) matched Dordel's effort, allowing one
unearned run on four hits while striking out seven over seven innings to
lead
Drake to a 3-1 victory in game two.
A Bulldog error in the first inning gave UNI a
1-0
advantage early, but a second-inning, two-run shot by Mollohan erased
the
deficit and put Drake on top 2-1 after two innings.
Leon padded the lead to 3-1 with a solo shot to
right in
the third, her ninth of the season and program-best 32nd of her career.
A two-run lead was plenty for DeLong, who faced
the
minimum in the second, fourth and fifth innings and struck out the side
in the
fourth. The win moved her record to 12-5 on the season.
The Bulldogs improved to 24-10 overall, 5-3 in
the MVC.
Drake and UNI finish their three-game MVC series
Sunday
at noon.
