DES MOINES, IOWA
- The Drake University softball team dropped a Missouri Valley
Conference
doubleheader to Creighton, Wednesday, falling 8-0 in the opener and
dropping
game two, 2-0 in nine innings. Junior pitcher Jenna DeLong
held a no-hitter through seven innings in game two.
DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) struck out 11 and was a
first-inning walk away from a facing the minimum through seven frames in
the
nightcap. The junior pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to
hold
the game scoreless, but ceded a ninth-inning, two-run shot to Creighton
third-baseman Michelle Graner to give Creighton a 2-0 advantage.
Bluejay pitcher Tara Oltman held the Bulldogs scoreless
in the ninth to pick up her conference-best 21st win of the season. Oltman, the three-time MVC Pitcher of the
Year, held Drake to just two hits in her four innings in relief in game
two.
The Bulldogs didn't fare much better against her in the
opener, falling 8-0 and managing just two hits against the Creighton
ace.
Junior pitcher Brynne Dordel
(Chanhassen, Minn.) weathered five innings and allowed seven runs on six
hits
and three walks to earn the loss. Dordel, who entered the start as the
Valley
leader in earned run average with a 1.27 ERA, saw her ERA move to 1.58
after
the outing - second only to Oltman.
Freshman Macie Silliman (Winterset, Iowa) and sophomore Torey Craddock
(Tucson, Ariz.) had Drake's only two hits in the
opener.
Drake falls to 28-14 overall and 9-7 in the MVC.
The Bulldogs head to Terre Haute, Ind. to take on Indiana
State in a three-game series this weekend. The series begins with a
Saturday
doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. central time.
