TERRE HAUTE, IND. -
The Drake University softball team split
its Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader at Indiana State Saturday, dropping
the opener, 1-0, and winning in the nightcap, 8-2.
Junior pitcher Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) was the hard-luck loser in game one after
allowing a single run on six hits and one walk in six innings of work. The loss
put DeLong at 14-9 overall and was the third loss of the season in which DeLong
threw a complete game and allowed one earned run or fewer.
Indiana State's game-winning run was scored on a
fourth-inning error by Drake.
The afternoon wasn't all bad for DeLong, as the junior
slammed her fifth home run of the season in the second inning of game two.
DeLong finished the game 2-for-2 and is batting .462 (6-for-13) with two home
runs and six RBI over her last seven games.
DeLong's homer ended a 32-inning scoreless streak for the
Bulldogs. Senior Elena Leon (West
Des Moines, Iowa) had three hits on the day, snapping a three-game hitless
streak.
Seniors Kelsey Kahler (hometown) and Bridget Shields (Iowa City, Iowa), junior Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) and sophomore Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.) joined Leon and DeLong with
multi-hit days.
Junior Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and
three walks while striking out six to earn the game two victory. The win put
her record at 15-5 overall.
The Bulldogs' record moved to 29-15 overall, 10-8 in the
Valley.
Drake and Indiana State will play game three Sunday at 11
a.m. Central time.
