DeLong Tosses No-Hitter, Drake Wins Two On Sunday

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Senior pitcher Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) tossed a five-inning no hitter in an 8-0, win over Green Bay and slammed a two-run homer to lead Drake over UTEP, 8-0, Sunday at the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic. The effort was her first-career no-hitter at Drake.

DeLong walked none and was a second-inning error away from a perfect game. The senior rang up 15 outs on seven fly balls, two groundouts and six strikeouts.

“I didn't know I had [a no hitter] until after the game,” DeLong said. “No one mentioned it or said anything.”

Drake put up eight runs on 10 hits behind DeLong's effort. Sam West (Kearney, Mo.), Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.) and Nicole Randel (Alpine, Calif.) all tallied two hits with Craddock adding two RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored. Craddock went a combined 4-for-4 on the day, scoring five runs and driving in two from the third position in the batting order.

Senior catcher Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) slammed a fourth-inning, two-run homer, her first of the season.

The win put DeLong's record at 2-0 overall. The senior has allowed no runs on just three hits and has tallied 22 strikeouts through two starts (12 IP).

Next, DeLong slammed a two-run homer in the fourth inning of Drake's 8-0 victory over UTEP, breaking a scoreless tie behind a brilliant pitching effort from senior Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.). The Bulldogs piled on six runs in the fifth, with help from a two-run double down the leftfield line by freshman Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.), to end the contest after five innings.

“It was a good way to end our first weekend,” said DeLong, who finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a team-best three RBI. “Everyone had an integral part in our success.”

Drake travels to Tucson, Ariz. next week for a five-game slate at the Arizona Invitational. The Bulldogs meet Kennesaw State in a 2 p.m. matchup on Friday. (Feb. 18).

Note:
DeLong held a no-hitter through seven innings against Creighton April 21, 2010. Drake lost that game, 2-1, in nine innings.
