Softball Splits On Day Two Of Hillenbrand Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Drake University softball team went 1-1 Saturday (Feb. 19) at the Hillenbrand Invitational, topping Pacific, 8-0 in six innings and falling to No. 4 Arizona 5-3. The Bulldogs moved their record to 6-2 overall.

Drake opened the day with an 8-0, run-rule victory over Pacific. The Bulldogs used 12 hits, including six for extra bases, to equal their season-high in run production.

Senior pitcher Jenna DeLong (Dalton Gardens, Idaho) was brilliant in the circle, tossing six shutout innings and allowing a single hit; a fifth-inning single by opposing pitcher Nikki Armogost. The senior struck out four, including two in the sixth inning, and walked one to move her record to 4-0.

Sophomore Macie Silliman (Winterset, Iowa) led off the game with a home run to left, her first of the year. DeLong and senior Erin Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill.) also homered. DeLong's was her third in the last four games and third overall.

Drake scored in five of six innings, including a three-run fifth behind an RBI double by Mollohan and a sacrifice fly to left field by freshman Nicole Randel (Alpine, Calif.).

The Bulldogs dropped a 5-3 decision to No. 4 Arizona in the nightcap after a seventh-inning rally fell short.

Down 5-1 in the seventh, Mollohan led off with a single up the middle and was followed by DeLong with a walk. Senior Molly McClelland (West Des Moines, Iowa) reached on a throwing error by Arizona second baseman Kristen Arriola, moving DeLong to third and scoring freshman Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) who pinch ran for Mollohan. Sophomore Sam West (Kearney, Mo.) scored DeLong on an RBI groundout to Wildcat pitcher Kenzie Fowler, putting the score at 5-3. Randel grounded out to Fowler to end the game.

Senior pitcher Brynne Dordel (Chanhassen, Minn.) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits during four innings of work. The senior struck out six and walked three to move to 2-2 overall.

Junior Torey Craddock (Tucson, Ariz.) slammed a fourth-inning solo home run, her first of the season, to account for Drake's lone run before the seventh.

At 6-2 overall, the Bulldogs will close out the Hillenbrand Invitational with a rematch against Kennesaw State Sunday (Feb. 20) at 11 a.m.
